Woman and Boyfriend Sentenced in Girl’s Death
A Bronx woman and her boyfriend were sentenced to 25 years to life in prison yesterday for the murder of Sabrina Green, a 9-year-old girl who was beaten, burned and wasted by gangrene in her final weeks. The discovery of Sabrina’s body late in 1997 caused an outcry. After her mother and then her first court-appointed guardian died, Sabrina was left in the care of her half-sister, Yvette Green, 34, even though Ms. Green had been investigated by the Administration of Children’s Services in 19…

Schools Are Faulted in Fatal Abuse Case
By LYNETTE HOLLOWAY
A series of mistakes, misunderstandings and oversights by school personnel allowed an abused 9-year-old girl — who later died — to slip through the New York City school system’s attendance safeguards, officials said yesterday. Repeated absences by the girl, Sabrina Green, who died last year, went unnoticed by school officials at two Bronx schools, according to a scathing 49-page report released yesterday by Edward F. Stancik, the Special Commissioner of Investigation for the city school di…

The half-sister of Sabrina Green — the 9-year-old Bronx girl who died of severe injuries earlier this month — and her boyfriend have been indicted on murder charges, the authorities said. Yvette Green, 32, and Darryl Stephens, 36, were each indicted Friday on charges of second-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter. They are to be arraigned on Dec. 11 in State Supreme Court, said the Bronx District Attorney, Robert T. Johnson. They are being held without bail.

Metro Matters; Fine on Paper, Truant Policy Fails a Child
By ELIZABETH KOLBERT
THE routine would, by now, seem almost comic if the consequences were not so often tragic. Nine days ago, little Sabrina Green was found dead in the Bronx apartment of her half-sister and guardian, Yvette. The truly gruesome details of her condition — the untreated burns and the missing thumb — are by now familiar to most New Yorkers, as are her features from happier days, the bright smile and the curly pigtails.

PICTURES OF SABRINA: A special report.; A Slide Into Peril, With No One to Catch Her
By JOE SEXTON and RACHEL L. SWARNS
The images all add up, now that Sabrina Green, 9 years old, is dead and buried. There was the sight of the dirty-haired child, in shoes two sizes too big, stumbling along to school last spring, apparently not taking the medication that stabilized her hyperactivity.

At Funeral, 2 Worn Dolls Left Behind
By FELICIA R. LEE
One of the saddest moments in a funeral of sad moments was when Jamila Spencer held up two careworn, chocolate-brown dolls that belonged to her 9-year-old sister, Sabrina Green, and said, ”This is all that’s left of Sabrina,” and then bowed her head. ”She moved a lot,” Ms. Spencer said of her little sister. ”Something told me to hold on to them.”

Girl Gets Care in Death That She Was Denied in Life
By AMY WALDMAN
In death, the attention paid to Sabrina Green was exquisite. A white bow had been placed in her perfectly curled hair. A white dress of satin and lace had been placed on her body. And a white glove had been slipped on her right hand. In life, the care given the 9-year-old was less benevolent, the family and friends who gathered for a wake last night at Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Harlem agreed.

Another Preventable Death
Monitoring and protecting tens of thousands of children who pass through New York City’s child welfare system is a sizable challenge. But Sabrina Green’s wretched death could have been prevented had school officials and child welfare workers done their job. The 9-year-old girl was found dead last Saturday of brain injuries and complications from untreated burns, a severed thumb and gangrene. Her sister, Yvette Green, who was granted legal custody of Sabrina in March, and her husband have bee…

School File Of Dead Girl Gives Details Of Great Hopes
By JOE SEXTON
Sabrina Green’s final report card at the Children’s Storefront School in Harlem, given in June of 1996 as she was finishing second grade, included a bit of advice: ”Next year is a much more serious year, and third grade means giving up many childish things.” And it concluded with the notation: ”We will watch Sabrina with love and a certain worry.” They worried for a child from a troubled family growing up and facing life’s complexities. As it turned out, third grade was the start of the …

Chancellor Says Schools Failed In the Case of a Girl Found Dead
By JOE SEXTON
In a blunt admission of fault, Schools Chancellor Rudy Crew said yesterday that Sabrina Green — the 9-year-old girl who was found dead last Saturday covered with bruises and burns and missing a thumb — did not attend a single day of school this academic year and school officials never adequately tried to find out why. Dr. Crew, appearing visibly shaken at a news conference at Board of Education headquarters in Brooklyn yesterday afternoon, admitted that school officials had failed at virt…
