Woman and Boyfriend Sentenced in Girl’s Death

A Bronx woman and her boyfriend were sentenced to 25 years to life in prison yesterday for the murder of Sabrina Green, a 9-year-old girl who was beaten, burned and wasted by gangrene in her final weeks. The discovery of Sabrina’s body late in 1997 caused an outcry. After her mother and then her first court-appointed guardian died, Sabrina was left in the care of her half-sister, Yvette Green, 34, even though Ms. Green had been investigated by the Administration of Children’s Services in 19…

Schools Are Faulted in Fatal Abuse Case

By LYNETTE HOLLOWAY

A series of mistakes, misunderstandings and oversights by school personnel allowed an abused 9-year-old girl — who later died — to slip through the New York City school system’s attendance safeguards, officials said yesterday. Repeated absences by the girl, Sabrina Green, who died last year, went unnoticed by school officials at two Bronx schools, according to a scathing 49-page report released yesterday by Edward F. Stancik, the Special Commissioner of Investigation for the city school di…

They are to be arraigned on Dec. 11 in State Supreme Court, said the Bronx District Attorney, Robert T. Johnson. They are being held without bail.

Metro Matters; Fine on Paper, Truant Policy Fails a Child

By ELIZABETH KOLBERT

THE routine would, by now, seem almost comic if the consequences were not so often tragic. Nine days ago, little Sabrina Green was found dead in the Bronx apartment of her half-sister and guardian, Yvette. The truly gruesome details of her condition — the untreated burns and the missing thumb — are by now familiar to most New Yorkers, as are her features from happier days, the bright smile and the curly pigtails.

PICTURES OF SABRINA: A special report.; A Slide Into Peril, With No One to Catch Her

By JOE SEXTON and RACHEL L. SWARNS

The images all add up, now that Sabrina Green, 9 years old, is dead and buried. There was the sight of the dirty-haired child, in shoes two sizes too big, stumbling along to school last spring, apparently not taking the medication that stabilized her hyperactivity.

At Funeral, 2 Worn Dolls Left Behind

By FELICIA R. LEE

One of the saddest moments in a funeral of sad moments was when Jamila Spencer held up two careworn, chocolate-brown dolls that belonged to her 9-year-old sister, Sabrina Green, and said, ”This is all that’s left of Sabrina,” and then bowed her head. ”She moved a lot,” Ms. Spencer said of her little sister. ”Something told me to hold on to them.”

Girl Gets Care in Death That She Was Denied in Life

By AMY WALDMAN

In death, the attention paid to Sabrina Green was exquisite. A white bow had been placed in her perfectly curled hair. A white dress of satin and lace had been placed on her body. And a white glove had been slipped on her right hand. In life, the care given the 9-year-old was less benevolent, the family and friends who gathered for a wake last night at Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Harlem agreed.

Another Preventable Death

Monitoring and protecting tens of thousands of children who pass through New York City’s child welfare system is a sizable challenge. But Sabrina Green’s wretched death could have been prevented had school officials and child welfare workers done their job. The 9-year-old girl was found dead last Saturday of brain injuries and complications from untreated burns, a severed thumb and gangrene. Her sister, Yvette Green, who was granted legal custody of Sabrina in March, and her husband have bee…

School File Of Dead Girl Gives Details Of Great Hopes

By JOE SEXTON

Sabrina Green’s final report card at the Children’s Storefront School in Harlem, given in June of 1996 as she was finishing second grade, included a bit of advice: ”Next year is a much more serious year, and third grade means giving up many childish things.” And it concluded with the notation: ”We will watch Sabrina with love and a certain worry.” They worried for a child from a troubled family growing up and facing life’s complexities. As it turned out, third grade was the start of the …

Chancellor Says Schools Failed In the Case of a Girl Found Dead

By JOE SEXTON

In a blunt admission of fault, Schools Chancellor Rudy Crew said yesterday that Sabrina Green — the 9-year-old girl who was found dead last Saturday covered with bruises and burns and missing a thumb — did not attend a single day of school this academic year and school officials never adequately tried to find out why. Dr. Crew, appearing visibly shaken at a news conference at Board of Education headquarters in Brooklyn yesterday afternoon, admitted that school officials had failed at virt…

Does A Rapist Celebrate Fathers Day

How does a man celebrate fathers day when he is known to be a rapist/molester.

Yes there are many men out here with children who commit crimes against children everyday.

The sad part is they never think about their children when they commit a sex crime with a child.

There are many wives out here who are all into the fathers day thing when you know the man is a pervert

sick, whatever you want to call it. but father? I would have to debate that.

Sperm donor yes, father no.

The question will always still remain what was more important?

You gratifying you? or loving your family?

Now knowing what you know why are women so eager to please a man

who has interest in their children or children period?

Its Fathers Day they make the children go out and buy gifts for a pervert

that is just crazy.

Then you have these crazy looking fathers getting dressed up for church

some even work in the church, “before you ask”

yes the devil sits in the church to people and sit up in there proudly.

shouting and even have an amen also.  Fathers day is just a day that men can just enjoy themselves with other men.

As if they don’t do that anyway every other weekend.

I guess I am saying man who commit sex with a child should not have the privilege to even

call themselves a father.

A father they are not, A rapist they can own.

This is just my opinion.

The Return of the Crack Baby. Again.

Here is a must read. good job to the writer of this article.
there is a lot of truth in this piece, I myself seen it all. I come from a place where its at your finger tips. Children do suffer from the poor choices mothers make when they decide to do drugs while they are with child or even have other children. Some children are very intelligent where others have learning disabilities. Our communities are in need of more facilities to help with sickness.
to the writer of this piece again good job.

“I think that if you say something three times out loud, people take it as fact. And also, I think there are certain ideas that people want to believe, that really fit in with cultural stereotypes, and it’s hard to get rid of those”– Claire Coles

I want to believe

A friend recently posted a Retro Report video about the crack baby myth on my facebook page with the comment, “you called this, like, a year ago.” Another friend emailed me the link and a note, “always ahead of the game, you are.” While I appreciate my friends’ propers, I should point out that people have been debunking the crack baby myth for over twenty years. The correction just can’t seem to stick. If I called anything, it’s that sad fact: we just can’t let go of the crack baby.

As I argued before, one reason why we can’t let go of…

How I Know My Wife Married the “Wrong” Person

This is a good one, The young man who wrote this piece sounds like a man who slipped and fell in a women’s mind. lol. I really enjoyed reading this article. I do hope others enjoy it as well.

Today my wife Lindsay and I celebrate our two year anniversary. Two years ago, we tied the knot and took the plunge. Two years ago, the cutest girl in Indiana was taken off the market! Two years ago, we launched the beginning of the rest of our lives. Two years ago…

And after two years, there’s no hiding behind the dinner-and-a-movie façade of dating life any longer. I can’t buy enough flowers to conceal it. I can’t open enough doors. I can’t say enough “I love you’s.” She knows (and painfully, so do I) that she married the wrong person.

Myanmar: Dhala, Bamboo village

Reading this article and looking at the photos remind me even more of how blessed I am.

i like to see

This bamboo village, that contains a few hundred tiny bamboo houses is just on the oter side of the river from Yangon in Myanmar. Even though people live in pretty poor conditions there, they smile a lot and warmly welcome all, who wonders around.

Identity, Motherhood, and Why My Revolution Will Not Be Televised

I really like this story from this young woman. The generation now lost so much of the old school morals that the children of today are lost. I do hope that many read this article it simply speaks the truth.

Black. Bunched. Mass. Mom.

Quote of the Day: “Revolution begins in the self, of the self.” Toni Cade Bambara

I’m trying not to be a “mommy blogger.” I don’t know what I am. I don’t even know if I want to identify as a “blogger.” I’m a woman who is writing about her experiences, and more and more, I’m finding that there aren’t a lot of women out there who see the world as I do. That’s not a terrible thing, though it is an intimidating one. It is a lonely internet world out there. So on Wednesday, I caught up on some of the reading from my other friendly blogs. My first stop was Faking Picture Perfect, an amazing blog that you absolutely should be reading. She wrote a beautiful article about patience and presence, something that every mom thinks about at some point in time. I appreciated her reflection (as always) and wish I…

Do I Look Like a Baby Killer?

This is something that many of women have had to go through at one time or another. It is sad to say that unfortunately we are thrown in many different categories when it comes to preventing our selves from becoming pregnant. All women are not the same, yes there are many who are irresponsible but

Fieldwork in Stilettos

This morning I went to Planned Parenthood.  I go every three months to pick up my birth control pills and again in August just before my birthday for my annual pelvic exam.

My usual concerns when going to Planned Parenthood are:

A)     Where am I going to park?  Parking in Center City is never easy.

B)      How long is this going to take?  The folks at the Locust Street branch are always friendly and seem pretty efficient but if you don’t have an appointment, you can find yourself sitting in the lobby long enough to watch an entire Tyler Perry film.

I’m never worried about getting stopped by protestors because let’s face it: this is 2013.  This is Philadelphia.  We’re not like that here.

Plus, my visit to Planned Parenthood has nothing to do with abortion, which makes sense because 90% of the services offered by Planned Parenthood have to…

Violence Against Women is Not a Joke

It is really a shame that we as women live in a society that degrades women in such a grotesque way. The makers of such dolls or dummies as they call it is going to produce more violence against women in the near future, then who should we hold accountable for the many women who will be pick off by a bullet because some idiot has had some target practice oh with what again? the dummy doll. Shaking my dam head at society. The Government the NRA < The house of representatives will not be move until the bullets hit there daughters or granddaughters. Should it matter then when its close to their home? AS A WOMEN IT MATTERS NO MATTER WHERE IT IS…

Girls' Globe

Exgirlfriend_target dollAngry at an ex-girlfriend or wife? Here, shoot at a bleeding, half-naked “Ex-girlfriend” target doll. It’s only a dummy – just meant for practice.

..Practice for what, exactly?

This doll was displayed at the annual National Rifle Association (NRA) Convention by its manufacturer, Zombie Industries (ZI). According to some reports, it has since been discontinued – but in fact, the company merely re-named it “Alexa” in stead of “The Ex”. Some people have claimed that the doll was never referred to as “The Ex” – but an image currently on ZI website curiously still refers to the female target doll package as “The Ex Box” (I’m sure whoever thought that one up considered themselves very funny and clever).

“Alexa” is still being sold by Zombie Industries, and unlike most of the “zombie” dolls, she does not have green skin, nor does she resemble a zombie. I also fail to…

SIFTING THROUGH THE LIES

I am looking at the many pictures of you as I went through the dresser draws of my mind. I see the different masks you wore to hide the real you. Afraid of the monster I assumed was the man I loved was nothing more then the creature that seduced me with the fantasies of lies that you loved me. How did I miss that? Afraid to let anyone in because of the state of heartache and pain you left my heart in, No one can be trusted in a world when most men or women are looking for self gratification at anyone else’s  expense. You are nothing more then a deceiver a wolf in sheep’s clothing. Keeping the fence around my heart and a chain with a God lock and key. I will not allow myself to slip for a lie that not only you can’t keep up with. or anyone else for that matter. I am no longer that young girl who was abused by my own family members and fell for someone who I thought was my knight and shinning armor. you were nothing more then a dark shadow riding in on an ass. I am stronger then ever. I no longer need you to love me. I love me enough for just me. I can’t believe I allowed you to rain in my life. When your nothing more then a drizzle. I say farewell to you and your different masks, and also farewell to all of your lies… Goodbye heartache and pain and Hello to a brand new life filled with love and truth…

I’m Sorry For My Generation

I really like this blog. At one time or another each generation felt the same way you do today. And I do agree with how some of the older generation do judge some people from the things that happen to them back then.

The Sounds of Silence

I found this blog interesting, sometimes when a person is silence you don’t don’t know what their thinking. ad that’s the scary part. Please always make noise. and the fishy mouth part made me laugh… you know if your mouth smelled of fish you would handle it quick. just saying, but I get your point.

Listful Thinking

As verbose as some of my blog posts can be, I’m a pretty quiet person in real life.

I come from a family of bookish nerds, so I’m introverted by nature and nurture, which probably has something to do with it. Another piece of it is self-preservation, I guess. Years of observation have taught me that sometimes stupid things come out of people’s mouths. I still say the darndest things, so it’s not like silence makes me immune, but it definitely cuts down on the sheer volume of dumb things I could be saying.
